Is Tech Ruining Office Productivity?

Written by C. Brown | 09/02/2019

Technology is supposed to make it easier for us to accomplish more tasks at work in less time, but does it really? The answer is, it depends.

It’s easier than ever today to send people messages and documents, and for this reason, it can seem like the office follows workers wherever they go, making them unable to escape the grind and indulge in the downtime they need. This would, on the surface, seem like an undesirable side effect of advancing technology.

On the other hand, the ability to work from a location other than your office can be helpful and freeing at times. For instance, technology allows companies to assemble a workforce that’s spread across the country or even the globe. Team members can labor away at cafes or in shared workspaces but easily remain connected to their coworkers.

Experts and Thought Leaders Weigh In

So the question becomes, do the advantages of technology for modern offices outweigh the potential disadvantages in terms of productivity?

Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, says he thinks it’s crucial to continue to develop software that brings workers in different locations together. Cal Henderson, the founder of Slack Technologies, said he believes the future of work will be more focused on teams, which means working remotely in shared office spaces will be easier than ever. Jason Fried, the creator of Basecamp, says his dream is an office to which workers look forward to going

The three spoke at the Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything festival in New York last month, where experts and thought leaders debated the usefulness of technology in today’s typical office environment. Some bemoaned the attitude of immediacy that comes with instant messaging, saying it promotes anxiety and thwarts concentration. Others expressed the belief that most technological advances have contributed to greater speed and efficiency in the modern office.
