This would, on the surface, seem like an undesirable side effect of advancing technology.
On the other hand, the ability to work from a location other than your office can be helpful and freeing at times. For instance, technology allows companies to assemble a workforce that’s spread across the country or even the globe. Team members can labor away at cafes or in shared workspaces but easily remain connected to their coworkers.
Experts and Thought Leaders Weigh In
So the question becomes, do the advantages of technology for modern offices outweigh the potential disadvantages in terms of productivity?
The three spoke at the Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything festival in New York last month, where experts and thought leaders debated the usefulness of technology in today’s typical office environment. Some bemoaned the attitude of immediacy that comes with instant messaging, saying it promotes anxiety and thwarts concentration.
